Published 24th November 2015, 1:23pm

In anticipation of a first-quarter 2016 implementation date, the Ministry of Financial Services and Commerce is releasing to industry an unofficial Consolidation of the United Kingdom Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and The Copyright (Cayman Islands) Order 2015.

The Copyright (Cayman Islands) Order 2015, which extends the UKís 1988 Copyright Act to Cayman, was passed by the UK Privy Council on 19 March. In the very near future, the Ministry will discuss with the UK Government minor amendments to Caymanís legislation, which will not substantively alter the existing version.

The release of the consolidated legislation is intended to assist businesses, industry and other stakeholders, such as the general public, to better understand the proposed legislative changes; allow them to take steps to achieve compliance with the new legislation when it comes into force; equip them to take full advantage of their existing and future intellectual property assets; and foster an environment in which intellectual property will flourish.

Copyrights are one of three main areas that will be tackled under Caymanís IP legislation modernisation programme. Changes to local legislation for Patents and Trade Marks also are anticipated in the first quarter of 2016.
